LA was gorgeous, but not gorgeous enough to clear my mind. I should’ve smoked a blunt before I left. The shuttle brought me to the Omni Los Angeles. Once I got a room, I noticed that I had voicemails. I was pretty sure they were from Seth. Lee had probably told him I left.

My emotions were barely hanging on, so I didn’t bother to listen to the two messages he’d left. It took practically four hours to get here, and I only wanted to sleep. It was ten at night in LA, but it was midnight in Houston. So, my body was feeling the jet lag.

As I lay here, I couldn’t help but think about what had become of my life and how I’d let everyone dictate how I lived it. I’d given my parents power over me all this time. Whether Seth realized it or not, he’d given them the power, too. The tears fell to the pillow as I lay here fighting demons of depression, hurt, and sadness.

Now I knew how Fawn felt. She felt alone when Mega and her daddy got killed. She didn’t have any family besides Jungle, but he was locked up. I felt the same way. But now she was a part of the family that I’d gotten released from.

I didn’t know how I would get over Smoke, and that shit wouldn’t let me go to sleep. I stood from the bed, put some clothes on to go down to get a drink. When I got to the lobby, I noticed there was only one seat left at the bar. I went to the bathroom and applied a little lipstick and moisturizer to my face. For some reason, I was expecting it to be partially deserted since it was a weeknight. I tied my T-shirt in a knot under my breasts, then left out.

I sat on the empty stool in between two men as my phone chimed. They both looked at me, then resumed drinking their drinks. The bartender was a man as well. “Hello, beautiful. What can I get you?”

I glanced around the bar to realize I was the only female there. “She probably wants something fruity,” the guy next to me said.

I scowled at him, then ordered a vodka tonic. He lifted his hands in surrender, but I ignored him. I just needed my drink. When the bartender came back, I said, “Make me another one. By the time you come back this one will be gone.”

I took that shit to the head, and I seemed to be the center of attention. At that moment, I really didn’t give a fuck. I set the glass on the bar top just as the other was set in front of me. “One more.”

The bartender looked at me, then nodded as the guy next to me said, “Damn, lil mama. What’chu running from?”

I refused to talk to him. My life was no one’s business. “Well, damn you bougie as hell, huh?”

“Can you just mind your fucking business?” I blurted.
